Then the Egyptians, now thinking that Abram doesn’t have a husband’s claim upon Sarai, will feel free to freely engage with Sarai. Abram tells Sarai to tell the Egyptians that she is his sister (v. Abram obviously didn’t think that the Egyptians were morally honorable people.Ī Shrewd Tactic to Troubleshoot the Problemįourth, since Abram doesn’t like the way that the probability of his being murdered plays out in his head, he devises a shrewd tactic to troubleshoot the anticipated problem. So, Abram begins to think about how to not get killed. Abram was concerned that the Egyptians would desire Sarai on account of her beauty, and they would assume that Abram is Sarai’s husband, and then they would kill Abram in order to have free access to Sarai. Sarai lived a total of 127 years, so at 65-70 years old she is in the beauty of middle age. We know from other passages that Sarai is pushing 70 years of age at this point, but her 70 is not our 70. The problem that Abram anticipates is recounted in verses 11-12. Third, with that solution came an anticipated problem. “So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there” (v. Do not assume that the presence of trials means that you’re in the wrong place. As surely as God brought Abram from Ur to Canaan, you can be exactly where God has led you – as Abram was in Canaan – and in that place face severe trials. Let’s begin with a simple summary of the text.įirst, Abram faces a pressing need: “there was a famine in the land” and “the famine was severe” (v. 18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife take her, and go.” 20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had. 16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.ġ7 But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. 15 And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. 13 Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.” 14 When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. 11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, 12 and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. All rights reserved.ġ0 Now there was a famine in the land.
